The aim of this discipline is to engage in social intervention and assess social needs to promote change, solve problems in human relations, strengthen freedom in society, and increase wellbeing and cohesion. To do so, theories about human behaviour and social systems, and specific methodologies must be applied so that social work conducted with individuals, groups and communities is effective.

Social work is relevant in all situations in which people interact with their environment.

The principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work, as is the EU’s Charter of Fundamental Rights.
